When a group of fourth
grade students at Leinkauf Elementary in Mobile initially came up
with the idea of a special automobile tag to help fund schools, the
students wrote letters to all of their local officials to ask for
their support. The late Senator Michael A. Figures, who served as
President Pro Tempore of the Alabama Senate, was the only elected
official who responded to the children's letters. He took up their
cause and authored the legislation that created the Helping Schools
Tags in 1990. Vivian Davis Figures, widow of the late Senator
Figures, is privileged to continue Michael's legacy by serving in
the Alabama Senate and by leading the Helping Schools Tags effort.
The Helping Schools Tags campaign is being sponsored by the Figures
Legacy Education Foundation, where Senator Vivian Davis Figures is
founder and President/CEO.
One of the greatest crises
facing our state is the continued lack of funding for our public
schools. There is an easy way to provide additional funding for
public schools - buy a Helping Schools Tag for your vehicle. It's
easy, it's inexpensive and it will help to improve conditions in
our public schools. The tags are only an additional $15, it's tax
deductible and nearly 75% of the purchase price goes directly to
Alabama's public schools.
